Italian restaurant in London

The "Padella Borough Market" is an extremely popular Italian restaurant in London, located right on the edge of the bustling Borough Market. It was founded by Tim Siadatan and Jordan Frieda, the two minds behind the equally celebrated Trullo restaurant in Islington, and has become a hotspot for pasta lovers since its opening in 2016. The concept of Padella is intentionally simple: it focuses on homemade pasta prepared with high-quality, seasonal ingredients and traditional Italian techniques. This simplicity, combined with excellent taste, has not only earned the restaurant a loyal following but also a Bib Gourmand listing in the Michelin Guide, recognizing its quality while offering affordable options.

Homemade pasta at Borough Market

The centerpiece of the menu is the pasta, which is freshly hand-rolled on-site daily – a process that passersby can observe through the restaurant's windows. A highlight is the "Pici Cacio e Pepe," a dish featuring thick, al dente pasta with a creamy sauce made of butter, black pepper, and Parmesan – a classic that impresses with its perfect execution. Also celebrated is the "Pappardelle with Dexter Beef Shin Ragu," where wide pasta ribbons are served with an eight-hour braised beef ragu, showcasing rich, deep flavors and reflecting the Italian love for slow-cooked sauces. For a lighter starter, the "Burrata" with olive oil offers a creamy, mild option that stands out for its freshness and quality.

The menu is intentionally limited, making decisions easier and placing the focus on the perfection of each dish. In addition to main courses, there are tempting desserts like the "Fig and Almond Tart," which provides a harmonious conclusion with its sweet fruitiness and nutty undertones. Portions are kept small, allowing guests to try different dishes and discover the diversity of flavors – a practice appreciated by many visitors.

Authentic Italian cuisine London

The atmosphere at "Padella Borough Market" is lively and unpretentious. The restaurant spans two floors: the ground floor features an open kitchen with marble counters where guests can sit and watch the chefs at work, while the basement area offers a slightly quieter, more intimate atmosphere. The decor is simple but stylish, with a focus on functionality and a touch of Art Deco charm accentuated by pendant lights and bright tiles. The proximity to Borough Market creates a vibrant environment, and the noise of the market often blends with the buzz in the restaurant, emphasizing the relaxed, almost familial atmosphere.

A visit to Padella requires some patience, as the restaurant does not take reservations – a decision related to its compact size. Instead, guests can use a virtual queue service via QR code, allowing them to pass the time by browsing the market. This waiting time, which can vary depending on the time of day and day of the week, is considered worthwhile by most guests, as the food and experience justify the effort. The service is friendly and efficient, with the staff always striving to provide guests with a pleasant experience despite the high demand.

Accueil super sympa, repas délicieux, eau pétillante (du robinet) offerte. Tarif un peu élevé au vu de la quantité (taille des assiettes de pâtes équivalente à un primo piatto = entrée).

Eating at Padella was highly anticipated but fell a little short of expectations. It was not mind blowing or out of the world, it was just ok, and that’s alright! We tried the crab pasta but felt the pasta shape was really thin, not to our liking and it gave a feel of a noodle rather than pasta. I would suggest to go with another dish like the pappardelle. The burrata was refreshing though. Not much space to hang coats and it can be a little cramped/rushed. But this is a popular spot with an intimate vibe! Would recommend but be cautious with selections. Don’t sit near the entrance as people will keep bumping into you while entering and exiting. Tiramisu was sold out but I assume that would have been a 5/5 dessert

Let me tell you Padella lives up to the hype. After a solid one-hour wait, I can confidently say it was the best pasta I’ve ever had in my life. Every bite was pure perfection, and I’d happily queue all over again for another plate. Beef Shin Ragu Pappardelle This dish was an absolute masterpiece. The pasta? Silky, fresh, perfectly al dente you can tell it’s handmade with love. The beef shin ragu was slow-cooked to melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, with rich, deep flavors that coated every ribbon of pappardelle beautifully. And that snowfall of Parmesan on top? The final touch of magic. Each bite was comforting, bold, and ridiculously satisfying. Cacio e Pepe A true test of pasta skill, and Padella nailed it. This dish was simplicity at its finest—just pecorino, black pepper, and pasta water, but executed to absolute perfection. The sauce was velvety and clung to every strand of that fresh, springy pasta, delivering a perfectly balanced hit of creamy, salty, and peppery goodness. The depth of flavor from just a few ingredients was unreal, proving that when pasta is this fresh and the technique is this good, you don’t need anything else. Final Verdict Padella is worth every bit of the hype (and the one-hour wait!). The pasta is fresh, the sauces are divine, and every plate is crafted to perfection. If you love pasta, this is a must-visit spot in London. Trust me—you’ll dream about this meal long after your plate is empty. 11/10, would wait again!

One of the best ragu I have ever tasted and I have tried many including in Italy!! The three pasta dishes we ordered were so good. There may be a line to get a table but on a weekday you can get seated very quickly

Visited Padella for dinner after work, it was okay, however, food came out quite quickly, i had the crab pasta, i feel like the pasta quality of the pasta was so fresh and phenomenal but it was lacking in flavour however tiramisu at the end was absolutely stunning. I feel like actual food was extremely overrated

i came for the pici:)..being at the counter you are up close & personal with the kitchen, not removed or distant.adds a frisson to the experience.my pici sated me completely sigh....my only wish is that it were more of a nest, and shoelace length...never mind the entry system, enough of a certain something (the food is alive, it breathes?) for me to plan a return.

My friends have been telling me to come here for so long, and I'm glad I finally did. It's very reasonably priced, and the food is delicious - I had the chocolate ice cream for dessert which was especially wonderful. I was served by Luke who was cheerful and friendly, and the bill came out to less than I'd expected! Can see why it comes so highly recommended

We enjoyed our meal at Padella, our pasta was delicious, the crab was yummy and subtly flavoured, my husband loved his nudja if was very moorish. The puddings were very good, although there was no mention of creme fraiche on the menu, the waiter offered to remove it but if I’d known I’d would asked for ice cream instead. The only disappoints were the carpaccio - it was a very small portion, I know beef is expensive but it was over priced. Also sitting at the bar was interesting but it wasn’t comfortable, we didn’t feel we could order a bottle of wine, relax and enjoy our food. We ate our food quickly and left, which is such a shame - I hope we get a better table next time.

Had to wait for a table, but they have an online queuing system which works just fine. What’s immediately apparent, once you receive your food, is that this place is so, so worth the wait - some of the best Italian food you’ll ever get outside of Italy. The pasta is fantastic and the service from our waiter, Salvo, was perfect. Can’t recommend this place enough!!!

Lovely place! Went to have lunch and everything was great. The pastas were amazing and the energy of the people downstairs made it even better. I HAD to go back the very next day to try other pastas. There could be a line, but if you go right after the place opens, it won't be a problem.
